Happiest Place on Earth: Day 1
As the school begins its annual trip to Disney World, Florida, a member of the Massachusetts Hospital School staff, Lars, takes us through their first day at the happiest place on earth. He writes…
“Massachusetts Hospital school is a very special place. It’s a family that day after day give all they have to enrich the lives of those who most need it. The patients are not patients. They are our children and we strive to make each day as enriching as possible. We don’t always have time to appreciate or notice the impact we have on them. The goal is to get them ready for adulthood and prepare for what to come. For 31 years graduating children who are being discharged from MHS gets to feel the magic of Disney.
Thanks to generous donors and the work of the board of Trustees, the trip provides an opportunity for the children to escape the medical, physical and often emotional hardship that each of them live with each day of their life. It’s a privilege to travel with them, to experience the moments that makes them smile, laugh and believe in magic that only Disney can create. This year 7 children and 14 staff are spending 6 days at the Boardwalk hotel on Disney resort.
This has been the home away home for 20 years and the hotel staff are eagerly awaiting our return. Rooms and suites have been outfitted with hospital beds and any additional equipments needed. On each bed a Mickey Mouse awaits to greet each child. Staff unpacks boxes and get the children ready for the first day of fun. After lunch we head over to Disney Hollywood Studios. There we did the star wars ride and watched the street performers before getting our place for the Fantasmic show and fireworks. The children are in awe as their first day come to a completion.”
Donations to the Massachusetts Hospital School Foundation are what keep this once in a lifetime pilgrimage possible for its students. Donate here to keep this 30+ year tradition alive.
